World Water Day: How high-tech greenhouses contribute

21 March 2024

Today, as we celebrate our most precious resource, it's crucial to recognize innovative solutions that are paving the way for a more sustainable future, especially in food production. One standout approach is Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) and the use of high-tech greenhouses.

Did you know that producing a kilogram of tomatoes in a greenhouse can use up to 75 times less water than doing so in an open field?

Why CEA & High-Tech Greenhouses?

In the face of growing global food demands and the increasing scarcity of water resources, CEA represents a beacon of hope. Here's why:

  • Water Efficiency: CEA and high-tech greenhouses utilize advanced irrigation systems, such as hydroponics and aeroponics, that significantly reduce water usage by recycling water directly to the plants' roots. This method can save up to 90-95% of water compared to traditional farming methods. Also, condensation flows back into the irrigation system: hardly any water will be spilled.

  • Optimized Growth Conditions: By controlling every aspect of the environment, including temperature, humidity, and water delivery, these systems ensure plants get exactly what they need, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency.

  • Continuous Production: CEA enables year-round farming, reducing the need for water-intensive seasonal crops and allowing for continuous, predictable yields. This not only conserves water but also contributes to food security.

  • Protecting biodiversity: Traditional farming often leads to significant water runoff, carrying nutrients and pesticides into nearby water bodies. CEA systems dramatically reduce runoff, protecting our water quality and reducing the need for water treatment, thus protecting biodiversity.

  • And it does not end there: The constant evolution of technology in CEA, including AI and IoT-based monitoring systems, continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in water conservation and plant growth efficiency. Sustainability is steadily climbing the ladder of importance within horticulture. It's only a matter of time before a significant portion of the population begins to prefer 'green' tomatoes over the conventional red ones!

As we celebrate World Water Day, let's acknowledge and support the innovations that are making a difference. By embracing and investing in CEA and high-tech greenhouses, we're not just conserving water; we're taking a giant leap towards ensuring a food-secure future for generations to come.
